Conventional forms of therapy such as traditional talk-therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy tend to focus mainly on working with the mind, and while our addictions have a mental component, they also are very much related to our emotions, our hearts and souls, and our spirits. Many of us believe that at our core we are spiritual beings, that our thoughts and feelings are extensions of our spirits. A holistic approach to recovery takes our spiritual development into account, helping us to address the ways in which our pain has manifested in our beings and in our lives. When we’ve sustained trauma and loss, we hold the energies of these painful things within us. These energies might present themselves as severe anxiety, panic, or anger. They contribute to our patterns – our thought, behavioral and relationship patterns are all affected by the energy of our trauma. When we have unhealed wounds and unresolved trauma, we carry their energy and it chips away at not only our mental health but our emotional health as well. Our spirits can suffer. We lose faith in ourselves. We can start to lose our connectedness with our inner selves, with other people, and with our higher power. We feel disconnected from our true selves and from our purpose. We can experience spiritual existential crises. Many consider addiction and depression to be spiritual responses to grief. When we focus only on the workings of our mind, we neglect the other parts of ourselves that hold the key to our healing. Spiritual healing can take many forms. It can include chakra healing, where we balance and align our energy centers, allowing us to feel more grounded, centered, calm and at peace. It can help us in all areas of our lives, including communication, self-expression, listening to our hearts and following our intuition. It can improve our relationships with self and with others. There are countless ways to heal our chakras, including spending time in nature and getting sunlight and fresh air, singing, chanting and receiving the healing benefits of vibration, and using specific colors and crystals. Other spiritual healing practices include yoga, meditation, prayer, reiki and tapping, all of which can help us to unify our minds, bodies and spirits in order to heal. When we are able to strengthen our connection with our inner power and our higher power, we have found a source of faith, comfort and support that we can rely on through all of our challenges.
