There are many faith-based roads to recovery. Most famously, AA and other 12-step programs involve turning your life over to a higher power. These programs have helped a lot of people. This is because belief in a higher power addresses two of the biggest needs of people in addiction recovery. The first is the need for purpose. Studies have shown that having a sense of purpose is more important than happiness for living a meaningful life. When you have purpose, it’s easier to stay away from drugs and alcohol. The second need belief in a higher power addresses is the need for social connection. When you spend time around people with the same deep beliefs, it’s easier to bond. Strong connections with other sober people is one of the best predictors of success in recovery. If you’re an atheist or agnostic, you might find yourself feeling isolated in the recovery community. Here are some ways to help your recovery stick, even if you aren’t religious.
Find a group that fits.
Although the idea of a higher power is standard in 12-step programs, these programs still have a major advantage: there are a lot of them. In most areas, you can keep trying groups until you find one you feel comfortable in. There are even atheist and agnostic groups. However, if you don’t find one of those, some of the less dogmatic groups might suit you well enough. Every group is a little different and in most areas you should be able to find an open-minded group of people who you can get along with.
Consider alternatives to 12-step programs.
Although 12-step programs are by far the most common, they aren’t the only game in town. There are some good alternatives to 12-step programs, and studies have shown that these can be just as effective as 12-step programs. The bigger programs include SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and LifeRing. SMART Recovery uses only evidence-based methods and may be best for scientifically minded people. Refuge Recovery is based on Buddhist methods of mindfulness and compassion and welcomes people of all faiths or no faith. LifeRing is essentially indifferent to methods and works by reinforcing positive behavior. Although there aren’t as many in-person meetings of these groups, they all have a strong online presence.
Accept that most people won’t understand.
No matter what, you will encounter people who want to force their beliefs on you and some will even insist you can’t stay sober without believing in a higher power. If you insist on making yourself understood to those people, you will make yourself angry and resentful. Just accept that certain people will never understand you and don’t worry about it. Focus on the things you can actually control.
