With the rising numbers of meth users, Utah police started looking more and more for dealers and suppliers to help end one of the biggest drug problems here. People who could no longer easily find meth simply switched their substance of choice to something more readily available with a similar high, cocaine and crack cocaine.
Cocaine is a fine white powdery substance that is a stimulant and often mixed with other substances, usually depressants such as heroin (speedball) and alcohol. It can be snorted, ingested, or injected right into the bloodstream. It can also be mixed with other things such as baking soda and made into hard rock-like substance known as crack cocaine or simply crack.
Crack is cheaper than regular cocaine and more potent. This makes it more likely for people to become addicted and overdose. Enough for one high can cost as little as $10 which makes it appealing to those who don’t have a lot of money to spend but are still looking for the high. In Utah, police have found an abundance of it being sold in downtown Salt Lake City. Some people believe that this surge in crack use is due to the population increase and people are simply bringing their habits here. Others think that the major highways through here are portals for transporting it through and to Utah. No matter the case, the rise of crack is still a problem in Utah. One of the biggest problems being the violence commonly associated with the drug. Sometimes the violence is between dealers over which area they can sell at but also among cocaine users.
With the rising use, there is also a rise in cocaine treatment. Although there are no medications approved by the FDA for the treatment for cocaine addiction there are many ways to start the recovery process. The first step to recovery is to detox from cocaine and any other substances that may have been abused with it, since it is commonly used with heroin and alcohol. These other substances can also become triggers for recovering cocaine addicts. It is also important to make sure that the treatment center knows about this polydrug use. Someone also detoxing from heroin or alcohol can have a more serious detox than just simply cocaine. After the drug is out of the system, the next step is rehabilitation treatment. During this period the recovering addict will begin individual, group, and family therapy to help them and their families understand their addiction as well as stressors and triggers that they will face outside of treatment and how to handle those without their substance.
