Recovery support group meetings are an excellent way to connect with others in recovery. When we are first starting out on our recovery journey, we can feel very lost and alone. We can forget just how many other people are living with similar issues and struggling in similar ways. Our isolation can make us feel removed from other people. When we were actively using, chances are we were surrounded by other addicts, and when we decide to get clean, we can feel like we have no one who understands, no one we can connect with. Support groups allow us to connect with people whose stories we can resonate with and learn from. In meetings, we share our fears and struggles but also our hopes and joys. We see firsthand that we aren’t the only ones dealing with the very difficult challenges of living with addiction. This can be comforting and reassuring. We’re not alone after all, and realizing this can take away some of the deep sadness that comes with feeling so isolated. There is a lot we can learn from each other in meetings. People share their experiences with coping with addictive urges, with getting through the day-to-day struggles of being recently out of treatment, with confronting temptation. We share lessons on finding joy in everyday life, incorporating mindfulness into our daily routines, holding onto hope when we feel scared, and reaching out for help when we feel depressed. We learn that there is strength in allowing ourselves to be supported. Meetings remind us to take the recovery process one day at a time, to keep coming back, and to keep reaching out. We learn that consistency in working our program makes all the difference in seeing tangible results in our healing. We learn that whenever we do falter, make mistakes, or even relapse, we can always get back up and try again. Meetings remind us that we can always recommit to our sobriety. It’s never too late to get back on track. It is so helpful to have a regular place we can go to for community, companionship and support. When we are struggling, meetings are one place we can always go. Sometimes in those moments of weakness or acute pain, we don’t know where we can turn or who we can rely on, but meetings offer us that place we can turn to any time we’re feeling overcome with temptation, when we feel like we’re losing hope or struggling with depression.
